But in an interesting turn, Farina refuses to name the captain for tonights match. I understand that it won't be Gibson, but why not say who it's going to be?And shouldn't it automatically revert back to the vice-captains of the team, Josh McLoughan and Andy Packer (notice Stuart McLarens name isn't there!!) What's the deal with putting someone as captain for a game that isn't even one of the teams vice-captains?

Indeed Jeccy. The loss of Spase almost has me changing my tip from 2:1 to the Roar to 1:2 to Newcastle. A huge blow. Even Matty's brilliance relies hugely on good team players around him, and Space was his main man last week.
I suspect your source for this story was The World Game website, as the ABC, Courier Mail and even the official A-League sites have not broken it yet. In particular, why is the official A-League site (including the respective team sites) always so slow in publishing the news about the A-League? Apart from the novelty of being 'the official site' there is no real need to go there. The World Game usually breaks the stories.

One thing the Roar cannot afford is to have a long injury list. It hurting to have Massimo out for so long. The midfield hasn't been the same since. Now we have the brick wall taken out of defence and a fairly lethal attacking option out as well. Tough game coming up tonight. Hope everyone else steps up and plays to their ability.

But really, why have a captain? I'm sure each team has a bunch of leaders, and all the captain really does is select which side of the coin they're after and choose a direction of play.
Historically I think the reasons for captains were to decide the outcome of the match. If required, a third person would be a referee between the two...
But in today's game, I think the role of captain is generally an unnecessary one. Even without an armband, a player like Muscat would still assert himself as the leader.
Hamish, I think I actually got the information from the Courier Mail. It was published online very early in the morning in Australia, but remember that because I'm in Germany, that means it's only mid afternoon here. And I don't bother with the official A-League site anymore. Although I do visit www.qldroar.com.au a lot. Wish I could make it my home page!!
As for the captaincy debate, the younger players need someone there to turn to when the going gets tough (as it tends to a fair bit in Roar games). I remember thinking that Gibson pulled out a great piece of captaincy when in his first game back he gathered the whole team together after the hand shake and formed a circle for a pep talk or something. That's something the captain should be doing.
In my opinion, the captain just provides stability for the team, which I think McLoughan was doing just fine.
10 040 very disappointed fans, including us, didn't see much in the way of leadership tonight. A very inept performance from the Roar. No commitment and certainly no confidence. How can three Roar defenders and a keeper watch Mark Bridge stuff around and score that third goal? Unbelieveable!
Too many chiefs and not enough indians perhaps? (Weren't indians called "braves"?) No bravery from a group playing as individuals and not getting it together as a team. Contracts up for grabs, so make the other person look bad perhaps? Very cynical view I know, but this season has all but slipped by.
McLaren had the armband until replaced, but didn't demonstrate much. McCloughan took over, but he is playing well below par. Gibson played a half and looked way out of form. So where does the inspiration come from. Lynch and Mori seemed out of touch and position tonight. Seo seems to make all the time and space to have his long range shots or often misdirected passes - he always tries. McKay gives 100%, but after 20 minutes, food poisoning got the better of him - so why did he start? Milicic seems to be a final 20 minutes player nowadays, so what can he do when the game is already lost?
The Roar spent a lot of time and I don't know how much money assembling a team of international reputations that might have looked good on paper. Cut the losses, focus locally and perhaps spend the money on one decent marquee player who can deliver the goods and perhaps lead by example.
I'll watch the replay on TV and see if the game was really as bad as it looked at the time. Honestly though, I've never seen so many fans pouring out of their seats before the final whistle. Were they playing "Follow The Leader", because he wasn't on the field tonight?!

Reddy, Packer, Buess, McCloughan, McLaren (replaced by Milicic after 70), Gibson (replaced by Griffin at half time), McKay (replaced by Vidosic after 20), Seo, Grossman, Lynch and Mori.
Breeze was the ref and he did okay really, with Kibbler announced over the PA, so he musta been inspecting Breeze or one or two of the AR's.
Only card I can recall was a yellow to Carle, for a late block on Gibson. No cards to the Roar - were they that good or just that uncommitted?
Its all OK Jeccy. We beat CC tonight. Great team performance. CC got two dodgy penalties and we weren't given 2 - so 2-3 could have been 1-5. Again 26 shots by Roar against something like 10.
